Manager, Underwriting - Denver CO
Job Description
A progressive, public entity self-insurance organization has an immediate opening for a self-motivated, results-oriented professional. Responsible for managing and coordinating Underwriting Department functions. Duties include: planning, developing and directing underwriting programs; negotiating pricing and maintaining an effective working relationship with all brokers and excess carriers for coverage of new and renewal business; reviewing all coverage forms, quotes and negotiates changes with carriers; writing policies and/or manuscript endorsements where necessary; managing daily program operations; developing new policies and procedures; directing and coordinating the annual property appraisal process; underwriting new business; responding to complex customer questions or inquiries to determine coverage applications; reviewing and suggesting changes to member contracts; directing and reviewing the annual application renewal process; supervising and directing staff.

Must be well versed in functions performed by both insurance companies and those performed by insurance agents. These functions include but are not limited to the underwriting process, coverage placement of both excess and reinsurance, certificate of insurance issuance and review, coverage and contract review for appropriate risk transfer, hold harmless and indemnification language. Must be extremely familiar with all Property/Casualty and Worker’s compensation coverages and interpretation of coverage documents as well as any optional coverages so as to address questions from members and ensure they have adequate coverage. Must by able to create master Certificate of Insurances and establish procedures for their correct usage.

We seek a strong team player who will enjoy collaborating with the rest of the underwriting team and with Member Relations, Finance, Loss Control and Claims. Excellent presentation skills are needed for representing CIRSA in educational and promotional settings. The Manager handles larger members and supervises a staff of four. Some travel is required.

Knowledge (position requirements at entry):
• Insurance coverage programs, policies and language;
• Underwriting practices and principles and their relationship to loss control and claims;
• Advanced insurance coverage and terminology;
• Knowledge of contractual risk transfer concepts;
• Leadership and management principles;
• Customer service techniques and principles;
• Human resources practices and principles including training and evaluation techniques;
• Applicable local, state and federal laws and regulations;
• Budgeting and accounting principles.

• Organizing multiple tasks simultaneously;
• Using computers and related software;
• Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interactions with coworkers, supervisor, and the general public sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, or a related field and five + years of progressively responsible insurance underwriting experience, including two years supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
